Fanart: Hornet vs Grand Mother Silk
Although the final boss of the first game in the series was far more impressive and ominous due to its narrative build-up, I found Grand Mother Silk from Hollow Knight: Silksong to be an outstanding boss encounter. In terms of design, I even find her more visually striking than the previous final boss.
I chose a wide, low-angle perspective to emphasize the physical size difference as well as the imbalance of power between the two characters. This perspective also gives the composition a greater sense of dynamism.
Since the goddess’s hair serves as the only light source within the scene, I had to carefully adjust the lighting and contrasts to ensure enough remained visible without making the image feel unrealistic. The golden needles, which function as Mother Silk’s weapons, are arranged symmetrically in pairs — much like Mother Silk herself — making every aspect of the character appear beautiful, majestic, and almost perfect. In contrast, Hornet appears almost imperfect and mortal through her flowing cloak and the needle held in her right hand.
Since the goddess’s hair, crown, and body are all white, I had to work very precisely with shading and lighting effects to ensure that each element remained visually distinct.
