original art: Dragon-Raid
A horde of ravenous dragons sets both the city and the sky ablaze, leaving behind a trail of devastation and death.
This artwork captures a dragon horde in the midst of its assault. Technically, however, these creatures are wyrms rather than true dragons. The smoke rising on the horizon serves two purposes: it reveals the direction from which the wyrms are approaching while simultaneously obscuring the full extent of the destruction, leaving much of it to the viewer’s imagination.
The greatest challenge of this piece was conveying distance. The buildings gradually diminish in size toward the horizon and naturally lose detail as they recede into the background. Another new and rewarding challenge was creating the interplay between smoke and fire, making the scene feel both believable and dynamic.
